Intelligence Brief: Fall of Assad is a Fundamental Change

This could lead to perhaps more damage for Iran to address (and divert resources) than the oil market is expecting.


Summary:

The overthrow of the Assad regime in Syria will have repercussions across the region and likely outside the region too. Syria was a geographic linchpin for both Iran and Russia. At the moment the overwhelming result is uncertainty as stakeholders vie to control Syria. In the midst of this uncertainty, however, there seems to be universal agreement that this has weakened both Iran and Russia in the region. The juxtaposition of the fall of Assad and the election of Donald Trump will likely intensify U.S. policy towards both Iran and Russia in 2025.
