Summary:
The Houthi attacks on shipping have demonstrated that weapon technology changes and proliferation have significantly increased the ability of both states and armed groups to disrupt maritime trade near key shipping lanes and choke points. Container shipping has largely left the Red Sea area. Refined and chemical product shipping has diminished. The volume of crude oil has also fallen, but not by very much. With the recent sinking of a chemical carrier, the attacks also represent an environmental and navigation hazard.
