As more information comes to light about Iran’s brutal crackdown on protests triggered by an increase in gasoline prices, developments there signal what may yet happen in Iraq where the government’s response to protests has been mixed. On one hand, the Iraqi government has conceded the resignation of the Prime Minister. On the other hand, government forces and Iranian backed militias have responded with violence. Iran clearly espouses a forceful response to the protests in both countries. More conflict in both countries is unavoidable. It is hard to imagine that oil operations will not be impacted.
